This is how you express some strong emotion, like surprise, disgust, or awe. It’s like you’re talking to yourself, making a big exclamation. “Man, how stupid is this guy?” The なんて (nante) just turns the volume up on that emotion.
You use this when you see something that blows your mind, good or bad. “What a beautiful car!” (なんて綺麗な車なんだろう。) or “What a dumb rookie.” (なんて馬鹿な新人なんだろう。)
This is your “internal monologue” or a movie voice-over. It’s you, looking at the city skyline after a big score, thinking, “Man, what a night…” (なんて夜なんだろう。)
