This pattern says the outcome isn’t fixed. It depends on a specific factor. The first part (〜か) is the question (e.g., “when,” “if,” “how much”), and the second part (〜によって違う) is the factor that makes it change.

You can use this when a rookie asks, “When do we get paid?” You tell him, “How much you get (いくらかは) depends on the score (ヤマによって違う).”

This is “dealer’s choice.” What game you play (the outcome) depends on who’s holding the cards (the factor). It ain’t the same every time.
