This one’s crucial. It’s about an outcome that’s set in stone, especially by someone else or by the situation.
This ain’t about what you decided. It’s about what it has been decided. It removes your personal will from the equation. It can mean “If A happens, B will be the result” or “The boss made a call, so now it’s been decided.”
We use this when you’re telling your crew the new plan: “The meet is off. We’re laying low (隠れることになった).” You didn’t make the call, the boss did. Or issuing a threat: “If you keep talkin’, you will end up disappearing (消えることになる).”
This is like getting a court summons. You didn’t decide to go to court, but the system (the situation) decided for you. Now, it’s been decided (行くことになった) that you will be there. It’s an external decision that now affects you.

Just take the plain, dictionary form of a verb (like iku, taberu, suru) and snap koto ni naru on the end. If the decision already happened, use the past tense koto ni natta.

- 掟を破れば、ファミリーから追放されることになる。 おきて を やぶれば、ファミリー から ついほうされる こと に なる。 (okite o yabureba, famirī kara tsuihousareru koto ni naru.) If you break the code, you will end up being exiled from the family.
- 明日から、俺がこのシマを仕切ることになった。 あした から、おれ が この シマ を しきること に なった。 (ashita kara, ore ga kono shima o shikuru koto ni natta.) It has been decided that starting tomorrow, I’ll be running this territory.
- このヤマが失敗すれば、全員が刑務所に行くことになる。 この ヤマ が しっぱい すれば、ぜんいん が けいむしょ に いく こと に なる。 (kono yama ga shippai sureba, zen’in ga keimusho ni iku koto ni naru.) If this score fails, we will all end up going to prison.
- あいつは喋りすぎた。近いうちに「消える」ことになるだろう。 あいつ は しゃべりすぎた。ちかいうち に 「きえる」 こと に なる だろう。 (aitsu wa shaberisugita. chikaiuchi ni “kieru” koto ni naru darou.) He talked too much. He’ll probably end up “disappearing” soon.
- ボスからの命令で、今夜カチコミに行くことになった。 ボス から の めいれい で、こんや カチコミ に いく こと に なった。 (bosu kara no meirei de, konya kachikomi ni iku koto ni natta.) By order of the boss, it’s been decided we’re raiding them tonight.
- 俺たちに逆らうということは、死を意味することになる。 おれたち に さからう という こと は、し を いみする こと に なる。 (oretachi ni sakarau toiu koto wa, shi o imi suru koto ni naru.) To oppose us means you will end up facing death.
- 急遽、取引場所を変更することになった。 きゅうきょ、とりひき ばしょ を へんこうする こと に なった。 (kyuukyo, torihiki basho o henkou suru koto ni natta.) It’s been decided that we’re changing the deal location, effective immediately.
- あいつが裏切ったせいで、計画を全てやり直すことになった。 あいつ が うらぎった せいで、けいかく を すべて やりなおす こと に なった。 (aitsu ga uragitta sei de, keikaku o subete yarinaosu koto ni natta.) Because that guy betrayed us, it’s been decided we have to re-do the whole plan.
- ドンに逆らえば、どういうことになるか分かってるな？ ドン に さららえば、どういう こと に なる か わかってる な？ (don ni sakaraeba, douiu koto ni naru ka wakatteru na?) You understand what will end up happening if you defy the Don, right?
