This is about an immediate, unexpected reaction. It means “The instant X happened…” something else happened right after, and it’s almost always a surprise. The second event is a direct, sudden consequence of the first.

This is like cuttin’ the wrong wire on a bomb. The instant you cut it (切ったとたんに)… BOOM! (爆発した). It’s an immediate, shocking result. There’s no delay. It’s Action -> BAM! -> Reaction.
