This is the exact same grammar as たとたんに (ta totan ni). The に (ni) is optional. It just makes it sound a little sharper, a little more dramatic. とたん means “just as,” “as soon as,” or “the very moment.” It still has that same feeling of an immediate, unexpected follow-up action.

Same metaphor, homie. You cut the wire (切ったとたん)… BOOM! (爆発した). The ni is just extra flavor. Leaving it off is like a quick jab. Adding it is like a jab with a little more sting. The meaning is the same.
