This is how you ask a question politely. It’s not “What is this?” (これは何？) It’s “I was wondering, what might this be?“. It’s softer, shows respect, and doesn’t demand an answer. The (ん) is just a more common, spoken version of の.
You could use this if you’re a new guy (a prospect) asking the lieutenant (the capo) a question. You don’t just say, “Where’s the boss?” You say, “I was wondering, where might the boss be?” (ボスはどこにいらっしゃるんでしょうか？)
This is like “knocking on the door.” You’re not just busting in. You’re showing respect by knocking, “Excuse me, I’m looking for an answer… if it’s not too much trouble.”
