This ain’t about when, it’s about how much. ずつ is for dividing things into equal portions or doing something little by little.

This is for when you’re dividing the score. “We each get $50,000 (５万ドルずつ).” Or when you’re being careful, “Move the stolen goods bit by bit (少しずつ運べ).”

It’s like dealing cards for a poker game. You don’t just slam the deck on the table. You give one card apiece, then another card apiece. Or you’re stacking your chips one by one. That’s ずつ.
