This is how you explain what you didn’t do. It’s the negative version of “by doing.” “He did B without doing A.” It’s a slightly smoother, more formal-sounding way to say 〜ないで (naide).
You use this when you’re describing someone acting slick, or making a mistake. “He left without saying anything (何も言わずに).” Or, “He got caught without resisting (抵抗せずに).”
This is like ghosting. You just dip. Without saying bye, without paying the check, without a trace. You just leave ’em hanging. That’s ずに.

You take the verb, put it in the nai-stem (the form you add nai to, like taberu -> tabe), and then add ずに (zu ni). The one major exception you gotta memorize is する (suru). It doesn’t become shi-zu ni. It becomes せずに (sezu ni).

- 仲間を裏切り、謝りもせずに逃げた。 なかま を うらぎり、あやまり も せずに にげた。 (nakama o uragiri, ayamari mo se-zu ni nigeta.) He betrayed his crew and ran off without even apologizing.
- 誰にも見られずに、ビルに侵入した。 だれ に も みられずに、ビル に しんにゅう した。 (dare ni mo mirare-zu ni, biru ni shinnyuu shita.) We infiltrated the building without being seen by anyone.
- ボスに相談せずに、勝手に取引を進めるな。 ボス に そうだん せずに、かって に とりひき を すすめるな。 (bosu ni soudan se-zu ni, katte ni torihiki o susumeruna.) Don’t move forward with the deal on your own without consulting the boss.
- 彼は表情一つ変えずに嘘をつく。 かれ は ひょうじょう ひとつ かえずに うそ を つく。 (kare wa hyoujou hitotsu kae-zu ni uso o tsuku.) He lies without changing his expression at all.
- 昨夜は寝ずに、ずっと見張りをしていた。 さくや は ねずに、ずっと みはり を して いた。 (sakuya wa ne-zu ni, zutto mihari o shite ita.) Last night, I kept watch the whole time without sleeping.
- 一発も撃たずに、敵のアジトを制圧した。 いっぱつ も うたずに、てき の アジト を せいあつ した。 (ippatsu mo uta-zu ni, teki no ajito o seiatsu shita.) We took over the enemy hideout without firing a single shot.
- あいつは金も持たずに、賭けに参加しようとした。 あいつ は かね も もたずに、かけ に さんか しよう と した。 (aitsu wa kane mo mota-zu ni, kake ni sanka shiyou to shita.) That fool tried to join the bet without having any money.
- 警察は俺の権利も読まずに、逮捕した。 けいさつ は おれ の けんり も よまずに、たいほ した。 (keisatsu wa ore no kenri mo yoma-zu ni, taiho shita.) The cops arrested me without reading me my rights.
