This joint is about individuality. It’s the opposite of a uniform crew. It means “each one has their own…” or “they each did their own thing.”
You use this when you’re explaining that a group of people all have different jobs, opinions, or alibis. “We all have our respective jobs (それぞれの仕事).”
Think of the Wu-Tang Clan. They’re one crew, but Method Man, GZA, RZA… they each have their own flow. They are all dope, but different. That’s それぞれ.

This word is flexible. It can act like an adverb (sorezore + verb) meaning “they each did…” or it can act like a modifier with の (no) to mean “each person’s (respective) thing.”

Here’s how you talk about the individuals in the crew.
- ヤマでは、それぞれの役割が決まっている。 ヤマ では、それぞれ の やくわり が きまって いる。 (yama dewa, sorezore no yakuwari ga kimatte iru.) In a heist, each person’s respective role is decided.
- それぞれのアリバイを確認しておけ。 それぞれ の アリバイ を かくにん して おけ。 (sorezore no aribai o kakunin shite oke.) Confirm each person’s respective alibi.
- 捕まった仲間は、それぞれ別々の刑務所に送られた。 つかまった なかま は、それぞれ べつべつ の けいむしょ に おくられた。 (tsukamatta nakama wa, sorezore betsubetsu no keimusho ni okurareta.) Our captured crewmates were each sent to separate prisons.
- 取引の後、俺たちはそれぞれ別の道で逃げた。 とりひき の あと、おれたち は それぞれ べつ の みち で にげた。 (torihiki no ato, oretachi wa sorezore betsu no michi de nigeta.) After the deal, we each escaped via different routes.
- この街の組は、それぞれの「シノギ」がある。 この まち の くみ は、それぞれ の 「シノギ」 が ある。 (kono machi no kumi wa, sorezore no “shinogi” ga aru.) The crews in this town each have their own hustle.
- ボスは部下の意見をそれぞれ聞いた。 ボス は ぶか の いけん を それぞれ きいた。 (bosu wa buka no iken o sorezore kiita.) The boss listened to each of his men’s opinions.
- それぞれがファミリーのために何ができるか考えろ。 それぞれ が ファミリー の ため に なに が できる か かんがえろ。 (sorezore ga famirī no tame ni nani ga dekiru ka kangaero.) Each of you, think about what you can do for the family.
- 裏切り者にはそれぞれの「落とし前」をつけさせる。 うらぎりもの には それぞれ の 「おとしまえ」 を つけさせる。 (uragirimono niwa sorezore no “otoshimae” o tsukesaseru.) We make each traitor pay for their failure in their own (respective) way.
- 警察はそれぞれの容疑者に違う嘘発見器を使った。 けいさつ は それぞれ の ようぎしゃ に ちがう うそはっけんき を つかった。 (keisatsu wa sorezore no yougisha ni chigau usohakkenki o tsukatta.) The cops used a different lie detector on each suspect.
