This is your hearsay tag. You use it when you’re reporting info but making it clear it’s not your info. You’re just the messenger. It’s how you spread gossip or intel without taking the blame.

We use this when we are quoting our source. “According to my informant… (情報屋によると)” “According to the boss… (ボスによると)”

This is the “word on the street.” You’re not saying it’s a fact, you’re just saying what you heard. “Yo, word on the street is the Barksdale crew is weak.” That “word on the street” is your によると.
