This is about worth. Is it worthy of respect? Worthy of trust? It’s a high-level, formal judgment call. It’s often used in the negative form, 〜に足らない (ni taranai), meaning “not even worthy of.”

Common Situation: “He is a man worthy of trust (彼は信用に足る男だ).” “That’s an argument not even worthy of consideration (議論に足らない).”

Metaphor: This is the “Made Man” test. Is this associate worthy of (に足る) becoming one of us? Has he earned his button? It’s the ultimate measure of value.

4. この「シマ」は、命を懸けて守るに足る場所だ。 この 「シマ」 は、いのち を かけて まもる に たる ばしょ だ。 (kono “shima” wa, inochi o kakete mamoru ni taru basho da.) This turf is a place worthy of risking our lives to protect.
5. 恐れるに足らず。あんな連中は小者だ。 おそれる に たらず。あんな れんちゅう は こもの だ。 (osoreru ni tarazu. anna renchuu wa komono da.) Not worthy of fear. That crew is just small-time. (tarazu is a classical negative form)
6. このビートは、俺のラップを乗せるに足る。 この ビート は、おれ の ラップ を のせる に たる。 (kono bīto wa, ore no rappu o noseru ni taru.) This beat is worthy of having my rhymes on it.
7. あのグラフィティは、芸術と呼ぶに足る作品だ。 あの グラフィティ は、げいじゅつ と よぶ に たる さくひん だ。 (ano gurafiti wa, geijutsu to yobu ni taru sakuhin da.) That graffiti is a piece worthy of being called art.
8. 彼のストリートでの「レップ」は、尊敬に足る。 かれ の ストリート で の 「レップ」 は、そんけい に たる。 (kare no sutorīto de no “reppu” wa, sonkei ni taru.) His street rep is worthy of respect.
9. あの政治家のスキャンダルは、脅迫に足るネタだ。 あの せいじか の スキャンダル は、きょうはく に たる ネタ だ。 (ano seijika no sukyandaru wa, kyouhaku ni taru neta da.) That politician’s scandal is material worthy of blackmail.
10. 彼の裏切りは、死をもって償うに足る。 かれ の うらぎり は、し を もって つぐなう に たる。 (kare no uragiri wa, shi o motte tsugunau ni taru.) His betrayal is worthy of being atoned for by death.
11. あのローライダーは、カーショーで優勝するに足る。 あの ローライダー は、カーショー で ゆうしょう する に たる。 (ano rōraidā wa, kāshō de yuushou suru ni taru.) That lowrider is worthy of winning the car show.
