This is the negative of kiru. It means there is too much of something to finish. The volume is just overwhelming. You can’t complete it.

You could use this when you open your bento and think “There’s way too much food, I can’t eat it all (食べきれない).” Or if you are completetly outnumbered in a fight and think “We have too many enemies, we can’t defeat them all (倒しきれない).”

It’s like a safe you can’t empty. You’re stuffing cash in your duffel bags, but the safe is too deep. There’s so much money, you can’t possibly take it all before the cops come. That’s kirenai.

5. 隠しきれない証拠が、まだ部屋に残っている。 かくしきれない しょうこ が、まだ へや に のこって いる。 (kakushikirenai shouko ga, mada heya ni nokotte iru.) There’s still evidence in the room that we couldn’t completely hide.
