This is the passive voice. It’s what you use when shit happens to you, instead of you doing it. The subject of the sentence is the one receiving the action. It’s not “He hit me,” it’s “I was hit.” It puts the focus on the target.

Metaphor: This is the victim’s point of view. The camera isn’t on the shooter, it’s on the person getting shot. You’re the target of the verb.
