はじめる (hajimeru) is about starting an action. This ain’t like 始まる (hajimaru) (something starts on its own, like a war). This is when you start doin’ something. It’s the “inceptive” – the exact moment you go from not doin’ it to doin’ it. When the cops show up, you 逃げはじめる (nige-hajimeru) – you start running. It’s the trigger pull. The action is now in motion, all because of you.
