This is the result of that prep work from ～ておく. You use this when you’re lookin’ at a scene and see that somethin’ has been done on purpose. The gun is on the table (someone put it there). The window is open (someone opened it). The trap is set (someone set it). It focuses on the current state of an object, but with the heavy implication that somebody did it for a reason.

• Pointin’ out evidence: “A message was written on the wall.” (メッセージが書いてあった)

The Metaphor

This is like walkin’ into the safe house after your boy set it up. You don’t see him doin’ the work, you just see the results. There are clean guns on the table (置いてある). There is cash stacked on the bed (積んである). There is a map drawn on the wall (書いてある). The state of the room tells you the prep is complete. That “is done” status, that’s ～てある.
