Aight, check it. ていた (te ita) ain’t just about what you did in the past. That’s ～た (ta). This right here, ていた, is about what you was doin’. It’s the past continuous, fam. It’s about an action that was in progress over a period of time in the past, or a state that was true back then. It sets the scene. It’s the difference between “he shot” (撃った) and “he was shootin’” (撃っていた). It gives that background action, the alibi, the setting for when the real shit popped off.
