This is the flip side. This ain’t observation, this is a command. てほしい (te hoshii) is you tellin’ someone exactly what you want them to do. It’s “I want you to…” It’s stronger than a simple request. When a boss says this, it ain’t a suggestion. It’s your new priority. It’s direct, it’s your will, and they better make it happen. You use this to give orders to your crew, your family, or anyone you got leverage over.

Common Situations

• Givin’ orders: “I want you to handle this.” (お前にやってほしい – omae ni yatte hoshii)
• Tellin’ someone to shut it: “I need you to be quiet.” (黙ってほしい – damatte hoshii)
• Makin’ a threat: “I want you to pay me.” (金を払ってほしい – kane o haratte hoshii)
• Callin’ for backup: “I need y’all to come through.” (助けに来てほしい – tasuke ni kite hoshii)
