This is when you’re at a dead end. You’ve looked at all your options, and there’s only one way out, and it probably sucks. It’s a grammar of resignation. You’re not being forced by one thing (zaru o enai), you’re just trapped by the whole situation.
Common Situation: You’re cornered in an alley. Cops at both ends. No doors, no windows. You can’t run, you can’t hide. The only option left is to fight or surrender. You look at your empty clip and say, “Fuck. No choice but to surrender (降伏するよりしかたがない).”
Metaphor: This is being out of ammo. You can’t shoot, you can’t reload. Your only options are to run, hide, or use your knife. If you can’t run or hide, you “have no choice but to use the knife” (ナイフを使うよりしかたがない). It’s the last move on the board.
