This is the big boss version of shikata ga nai. It means the exact same thing, but it’s stiffer, more formal, and sounds more final. It’s the grammar of an ultimatum.

Metaphor: If yori shikata ga nai is the soldier in the trench saying “I’m out of ammo,” yori hoka nai is the General’s official report stating: “Ammunition is depleted. No choice but to engage in close-quarters combat.” Same meaning, but the formality and weight are different.

   It was confirmed that he was a rat. There is no choice but to pass judgment on him by our own family’s hand.
2. 敵てきは和平わへいを望のぞんでいない。もはや、皆殺みなごろしにするよりほかない。
   The enemy does not want peace. At this point, there is no choice but to massacre them all.
3. 一いち度どでも裏切うらぎれば、それは死しを意味いみする。それがこの世界せかいの掟おきてであり、受うけ入いれるよりほかない。
   If you betray even once, it means death. That is the law of this world, and there is no choice but to accept it.
4. ボスが「白しろ」と言いえば、たとえ黒くろでも「白しろ」と答こたえるよりほかない。If the boss says it’s “white,” even if it’s black, you have no choice but to say “white.”
5. 人質ひとじちが俺おれたちの顔かおを見みた。生いかして帰きすわけにはいかない。撃うつよりほかない。
   The hostage saw our faces. We can’t let them go back alive. There is no choice but to shoot.
6. 銀行ぎんこうの警報けいほうが鳴なった。中なかにいる仲間なかまを見捨みすてて、自分じぶんだけ逃にげるよりほかない。
   The bank alarm rang. There is no choice but to abandon my partners inside and escape alone.
7. このクラシックなローライダーの部品ぶひんはもうない。自作じさくするよりほかない。
   The parts for this classic lowrider don’t exist anymore. There’s no choice but to fabricate them myself.
8. 我々われわれの「シマ」で勝手かってに商売しょうばいを始はじめた。あの店みせを焼やき払はらうよりほかない。
   They started a business on our turf without permission. There is no choice but to burn that shop to the ground.
9. サンプリングの許可きょかが下おりなかった。自分じぶんで一いちからビートを組くむよりほかない。
   The sample didn’t clear. There’s no choice but to build the beat from scratch myself.
10. 弟おとうとは敵てきに情報じょうほうを売うった。ファミリーの長ちょうとして、俺おれが弟おとうとを処刑しょけいするよりほかない。My brother sold info to the enemy. As head of the family, I have no choice but to execute him myself.
