This ain’t just “first” like in a list. This is the number one reason. When you’re arguing against something, 第一 (dai-ichi) is the first and most important reason you give. It’s your lead argument.

Common Situation: “We can’t hit that bank. In the first place (第一), it’s right across from the police station!”

Metaphor: This is your leadoff hitter. When you’re making your case, this is the first and strongest argument you send to the plate. It’s the “Number 1 reason” this is a wack idea.

8. 今日の取引は中止だ。第一、情報が漏れている。 きょう の とりひき は ちゅうし だ。だいいち、じょうほう が もれている。 (kyou no torihiki wa chuushi da. dai-ichi, jouhou ga moreteiru.) Today’s deal is off. The main reason is, the info has been leaked.
